Colonial and Caribbean Secrets 12 Days

Day 1º. (TUE) El Salvador Airport – San Salvador
Arrival to Guatemala City airport and transfer to your hotel in Salvador. Lodging.

Day 2º. (WED) San Salvador – Cerro Verde – Ataco
Breakfast. Departure to the colonial gem of Ataco. In route, we will visit the National Park of Cerro Verde, a sleeping volcano covered by a dense cloud forest of impressive beauty. During the visit we go through its crater and admire from various viewpoints the most impressive visits of the Izalco volcano, Ilamatepec Volcano and the cauldron-type volcano called Lago de Coatepeque. Lodging.

Day 3º. (THU) Ataco
Breakfast.In the morning, we will visit a coffee plantation to know the process of cultivation, harvesting and roasting. Rest of the afternoon free to visit the cobbled streets of Ataco and admire the colourful murals that adorn the walls of the houses of its inhabitants, a tradition that makes this colonial town unique and unrepeatable. Lodging.

Day 4º. (FRI) Ataco – Tazumal – Santa Ana – Joyas de Cerén – Suchitoto
Breakfast. Departure to the archeological site of Tazumal, the most important Mayan ceremonial center in El Salvador. We will continue to Santa Ana, the second most important city in the country. We will visit its charming historic centre, the National Theatre, the central square and the Gothic-style cathedral. Then we’ll go to the archaeological site Joya de Cerén, declared World Heritage by UNESCO and known as the Mayan Pompeii. Undoubtedly, this is one of the most important archaeological discoveries in Latin America. In the afternoon: transfer to the colonial city of Suchitoto. Lodging.

Day 5º. (SAT)  Suchitoto
Breakfast.  Today, we’ll have a walking tour along Suchitoto, visiting its beautiful cobbled streets, art galleries, craft houses, its Central Park and the church of Santa Lucia. Free afternoon for optional activities such as an indigo workshop or a boat trip along Suchitlán Lake. Lodging.

Day 6º. (SUN) Suchitoto – Copán
Breakfast. Early departure to the border with Honduras. During the day, we will cross the Honduran border to visit Copan, which keeps stelae, pyramids, ball games and unique burials in the Mayan world. Lodging.

Day 7º.  (MON) Copán – Quiriguá – Área Izabal
Breakfast. Departure to the Caribbean side of Guatemala On our way, we will include the visit to Quiriguá, archaeological site that has the tallest stelae built by the Mayas. At the end of the visit, we will visit Izabal, one of the nature wonders of the country. Lodging.

Day 8º. (TUE) Izabal area – Río Dulce – Petén.
Breakfast. Morning boat ride through Río Dulce, a unique place of ecological and natural richness. Through the ride, we will go by boat to the touristic site of Cayo Quemado, to have a living experience.  With the community members, we will enjoy a culinary workshop preparing a delicious winkle (also known as “burro”) or shrimp and coconut ceviche. After lunch, we will continue our boat tour and head to Río Dulce town, where our transportation is going to be waiting to continue our trip to Petén jungle. Lodging.

Day 9º. (WED) Petén – Tikal – Guatemala
Breakfast. Today we will visit the Mayan city of Tikal, the jewel of the Classic period. Lunch in the archaeological site. Transfer to Flores airport to take a short flight back to Guatemala. Transfer to the hotel. Lodging.

Day 10º. (THU) Guatemala – Chichicastenango – Atitlán
Breakfast. Departure to Guatemalan Highlands with destination to the village of Chichicastenango, where we will visit one of the most famous indigenous markets in all Latin America. Today, we will enjoy a living experience, where the travelers will have a corn workshop with local women. Corn is the most important staple food in Guatemala. After the visit we will continue towards Lake Atitlán, that Aldous Huxley said “it is one of the most beautiful lakes in the world”. Lodging.

Day 11º. (FRI) Atitlán – Santiago – La Antigua
Breakfast. Today we will take a boat to visit the village Tzutuhil of Santiago Atitlán. After the excursion, we will continue to La Antigua, arrival in mid-afternoon and orientation tour in this colonial city declared World Heritage Site: we’ll visit the Cathedral, central plaza, main monuments and museums. Lodging.

Day 12º. (SAT) La Antigua – Guatemala Airport
Breakfast. Transfer to Guatemala City airport. End of our services.
