The Table of the Maya 8 days

Day 1| SAB – Guatemala Airport – Guatemala City
Arrival to the International Airport and transfer to hotel in Guatemala City. Lodging at Hotel Barceló.

Day 2| SUN – Guatemala City – Talk and workshop: Guatemalan gastronomy – Petén
Breakfast. We will have a panoramic sightseeing of Guatemala. We will see the Cathedral, the Main Square, the National Palace and the Reforma Avenue. At mid-morning we will have our cooking workshop and introductory talk on Guatemalan gastronomy, given by a renowned Guatemalan chef. Lunch. In the afternoon, we will take a regular flight to Flores. Transfer to the hotel. Lodging at Hotel Villa Maya.

Day 3| MON – Petén – Tikal – Petén
Breakfast. Today we will visit the Mayan city of Tikal, the jewel of the classic Maya World. Lunch in the archaeological site.  Rest of the afternoon will be free to enjoy a walk through Flores Island, with a relaxing view of Lake Petén Itzá. Lodging at Hotel Villa Maya.

Day 4| TUE – Petén – Guatemala – Iximché – Lake  Atitlán
Breakfast. At the time indicated transfer to the airport to board the flight back to the city. Reception and departure to the inside of the Guatemalan highlands. On our way, we will visit Iximché, the old Mayan Capital of the Cakchiquel Kingdom. We will continue to Lake Atitlán, that the expert Aldous Huxley said “it is the one of the most beautiful lakes in the world” with its three volcanoes and sheltering twelve indigenous peoples. Lodging at Hotel Porta del Lago.

Day 5| WED – Lake Atitlán – San Juan La Laguna – Cooking Workshop – Lake Atitlán
Breakfast. Transfer by boat to San Juan La Laguna, one of the most beautiful towns of Lake Atitlán and cultural visit of the population in charge of the community association. At noon we will meet with our culinary hosts who will accompany us for the adventure of smells and particular flavors typical of the Mayan culture.  We will prepare our own lunches.   In the afternoon, transfer to the hotel. Lodging at Hotel Porta Del Lago.

Day 6| THU – Lake Atitlán – Chichicastenango – La Antigua
Breakfast. Early in the morning, we will visit Chichicastenango, the most famous and colorful open-air Market of all Latin America. Today, we will enjoy a living experience, where the travelers will have a corn workshop with local women. Corn is the most important staple food in Guatemala. In the afternoon, transfer to Antigua, a colonial city declared a World Heritage Site. Lodging at Hotel Camino Real Antigua.

Day 7| FRI – La Antigua – Cooking Workshop – La Antigua
Breakfast. Today we will enjoy a walk through the cobbled streets of Antigua that will transport us to the XVII century. We will pass by the Cabildo and the Palace of the General Captains, La Merced Church, San Francisco and some other colonial corners. In the background, the Volcano will be a silent witness of our walk. In the middle of the morning, we will meet at the Restaurant La Fonda de la Calle Real, the ideal place to taste the high Guatemalan gastronomy, visited by important and famous personalities. The chefs of the restaurant will share the secrets that host Guatemalan culinary art and reflect the history of the richness of natural resources. With them, we will prepare step by step some delicious Guatemalan patties that we will taste in our lunch today. Rest of the afternoon will be free. Lodging at Hotel Camino Real Antigua.

Day 8| SAT – La Antigua – Guatemala Airport
Breakfast.  Transfer to the International Airport of Guatemala City. End of our services.

Guatemala it is not only an extraordinary heavenly country with natural wonders, diversity of ethnic groups, languages and cultures, but it is also an outstanding destination with its own gastronomy as a result of combining the Spanish and Mayan Cultures. The flavors of the Guatemalan cuisine are unique. During this trip, we will have the opportunity to learn through lectures and workshops about the Guatemalan gastronomy, and to know about the current trends that the Guatemalan chefs have applied using the secrets of the Mayan grandmothers´ gastronomy.
